Cub Scouts

We are Boy Scouts of America Cub Scout Pack 2, chartered to Northwest Hills United Methodist Church, serving families in Austin's Northwest Hills neighborhood and Doss Elementary.

For more information about Pack 2 and Cub Scouts in general, please plan to attend our annual Swim Party at Westover on June 10th or later in the summer, come out for our Angry Birds Recruiting Event, held at the Doss Elementary blacktop area on Sat, Aug 19, 2017, from 10am - 12pm.  See the Pack 2 Registration page for more details.

Pack Meeting Sunday 5/18 3-5pm

Posted on May 17 2014 - 8:45pm

Pack 2 will hold our final Pack Meeting of the school year on Sunday afternoon, 3-5pm at Northwest Hills United Methodist Church in the gymnasium, upstairs in the Family Life Center building.  We'll present awards and recognition to all the Scouts who have earned advancement recently, and then head outside to build and launch water rockets!

All Scouts are asked to bring one 20oz (disposable style) water bottle or clean 2-liter soda bottle, and a towel!

Following the meeting, from 5-5:30pm, we will participate in a service project for NWHUMC in gratitude for their sponsorship of our Pack.  We will be picking bluebonnets from the church grounds and collecting the seeds for planting next year, so there will be even more bluebonnets.

Kindergarten or any new families are welcome to join in the water rocket fun at 3:45pm.  While the kids build and launch, parents can speak with the Pack 2 leaders about joining Cub Scouts.

I hope to see everyone on Sunday afternoon!

Preparing for our Cub World Campout, June 7-8

Posted on Apr 23 2014 - 8:08am

Pack 2 will, for the first time in collective memory, be camping at Cub World (the space designed and used exclusively by Cub Scouts) at the Lost Pines Scout Ranch, Bastrop, TX, on June 7-8.  While there, we will have use of the BB Gun range on Saturday afternoon, and the swimming pool (it will be June after all).

Sunday Pack Meeting - outdoor games!

Posted on Apr 10 2014 - 11:18pm

For our April Pack meeting, it's time to have more fun outside in this beautiful weather.  We will meet at the Doss blacktop for our opening flag ceremony lead by our 3rd grade Bear Cubs, and then play outdoor games: Capture the Flag and kickball.  Everyone should bring a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated.  We will need parent participation as well (organizing the games, and playing too!).

See you Sunday!

Thank You to Pack 2 for Honoring Gerry Tharp and Our Family

Posted on Mar 27 2014 - 10:02pm

The family of Gerald George "Gerry" Tharp, including Rich, Kendra and Austin Tharp, Gerry's wife Gayle Tharp and daughter Angela Tharp would like to thank Pack 2 for honoring Gerry by providing a bounty of food to our family and friends, for the floral arrangement, for Pack 2 leaders attending Gerry's funeral service Monday en masse, and for many additional thoughtful acts of kindness and love, including calls and cards. We have been lifted up during this difficult time by your grace, and it will never be forgotten.

Austin Tharp's Grampa Gerry was able to award Austin his Webelos badge in a special ceremony performed in his home on Tuesday, March 18. This ceremony took place because of the kindness of several Pack 2 leaders who exempify the values of Scouting. Webelos Den Leader Kirk Divine let Austin do his den leader conference over the phone Sunday, March 16 since Kirk was going to California early the next day. Committee Member Gina McKallip picked up badges for Austin and her son Ben, who had also earned his Webelos badge and paced his buddy to finish the requirements. Cubmaster Matt Domsch left work early, wore his uniform, and missed his son's baseball game to preside over the ceremony. Gerry dressed up, and wore his WWII-era folding Boy Scout cap and orange neckerchief. After presenting Austin his Webelos badge and painting his face with Webelos warpaint, Gerry gave Austin his Boy Scout cap and neckerchief. Gina gave Ben his award and painted his face. After congratulations and hugs, Gerry retired to bed exhausted. 36 hours later he was gone.

There was a lot of the Spirit of Scouting in the Tharp living room that day, in the way that everybody pulled together to allow our family to have one last proud moment of celebration, and in the way Dad gave his last ounce of strength to honor his grandson. It was a scene we'll always remember and celebrate. We are fortunate and blessed to have friends like the folks in Pack 2, who have had our backs through Gerry's illness and passing. Thank you to all, with love and appreciation.

Yours in Scouting,
