Cub Scouts

We are Boy Scouts of America Cub Scout Pack 2, chartered to Northwest Hills United Methodist Church, serving families in Austin's Northwest Hills neighborhood and Doss Elementary.

For more information about Pack 2 and Cub Scouts in general, please plan to attend our annual Swim Party at Westover on June 10th or later in the summer, come out for our Angry Birds Recruiting Event, held at the Doss Elementary blacktop area on Sat, Aug 19, 2017, from 10am - 12pm.  See the Pack 2 Registration page for more details.

Camp Mabry Campout (Sep 2015)

Posted on Sep 17 2015 - 5:02pm

The first Pack 2 campout for the 2015/16 season is upon us!  Here are some quick links for those new to Pack 2:

  • General Info here and Camp Plan posted below with activities and times.
  • Here is a short camping checklist to make sure you have all the Pack 2 campout  essentials
  • Pack 2 maintains a Camping Gear page with helpful info about our campouts in general (found under Pack Resources)
  • We also have a page with handy information for those volunteering for the campouts: Campfire Resources
  • Adults: Remember to bring a valid ID to show at the gaurd station at the entrance to Camp Mabry
  • We are at a different site than in 2014: Go straight past guard station to the end of the road, turn left and look for signs guiding you to our site.

Other items to note:

  • We can arrive starting Noon on Saturday.
  • Meals are being coordinated by grade level (rank).  We have dinner Saturday and breakfast Sunday to prepare.
  • Youth can fish for free.  Adults fishing (as opposed to instructing, untangling, and putting bait on hooks) require a valid Texas State fishing license.  The upper pond has stocked Rainbow Trout (yum!).  All other fish in both the upper and lower ponds are strictly catch-and-release. (This portion of the camp was once the primary firing range and motor pool.  You don't want to know what could be in those fish.)
  • Throughout the day, please keep tabs on your scouts and siblings. The kids enjoy running around in the woods (which is fine), and near the ponds (much less fine).  This area of camp is quite large, it wouldn't take much to get lost.  Remind scouts and siblings to use the buddy system.
  • All adults must have valid Youth Protection Training.  All Pack 2 registered leaders' YPT are current.   Visit scouting.org if you have not taken online or the in-person YPT class.

Pack Meeting Sunday - Cubs Take Flight!

Posted on Jun 17 2015 - 3:23pm

Pack 2 will host its final Pack meeting of the year on Sunday (5/17), 3pm at Northwest Hills UMC. We will recognize several scouts who have completed rank advancement.

For our activity, we will host a paper airplane contest. Scouts, siblings, and parents are encouraged to create airplanes at home ahead of time, or you can make them at the event.

We will have awards for:

* furthest flight
* most accurate flight
* most creative flight
* best Scout theme

Be creative! You can use any size, weight, color, or material you like. The only limit is it must be hand-propelled (no rocket engines please!)

With the end of a school year approaching, we also will introduce and thank these parents who are stepping into new leadership roles:

- Committee Chair David Jensen
- Cubmaster Jason Rios
- Assistant Cubmaster Corby Brooks
- Assistant Cubmaster Chad Jowers
- Treasurer Kasey Gilliam
- Chartered Org Representative (for NWHUMC): Greg Gitcho

I hope to see you Sunday!

Cubmaster (for a few more days)

Blue & Gold Banquet / Crossover details

Posted on Mar 5 2015 - 11:07pm

I hope everyone is excited for this Sunday's Blue and Gold Banquet.  We have a lot in store.  All boys who have earned rank advancement thus far will take part in their face painting ceremony.  We celebrate the achievement of 19 Webelos 2 scouts earning their Arrow of Light award, the highest award in Cub Scouts.  And we cheer as 16 scouts continue their path to Eagle by crossing over into Boy Scouts.  We will be joined by the Order of the Arrow Ceremonial Team from Troop 3, and representatives of Troops 3, 410, and 511 into which our scouts are crossing.

We have a special catered BBQ dinner, inside the Frank Fickett Scout Center, surrounded by scouting memorabilia, and a slide show honoring our Webelos scouts.

Following dinner, we will have an outdoor campfire at the fire ring, an abbreviated format compared to normal campouts, enjoying the beautiful weather and setting. Families are welcome to stay for campfire, or return home.

This is looking like the largest event Pack 2 has hosted within memory, with well over 200 people expected to attend, and our first event at the Fickett Center.  As such, we will need your help in various ways to ensure the evening proceeds smoothly.

  • There are a limited number of parking spaces in the Center's own lot.  Street parking along Indian Mound Rd. between the I-35 frontage road and Lamar is recommended.  Overflow parking into the lot south of the center may be available.
  • If you have a camp chair, please bring one.  We'll need them for the campfire, and may need them for the awards ceremony too.  The Center provides chairs for use outside, but not quite 200+.
  • Please do look around the scout center and the items on display.  Please do not try opening closed doors, especially to the Scout Shop, as these are both locked and alarmed.

Schedule is as follows:

  • 4:45pm arrival
  • 5pm-6pm Awards ceremony on the back patio of the Center (weather permitting).  As we have 57 scouts with advancement this month, we encourage scouts to sit together by rank so we can get them to the front quickly.
  • 6pm-7pm catered BBQ dinner by Mopsies.  We will have table markers by rank and encourage ranks to eat together (families with multiple scouts can choose where to sit).
  • 7-8pm Campfire at the outdoor fire ring.  Scouts staying for this should come prepared with a joke - ideally scout themed.  Parents are asked to review jokes for appropriateness. Bring flashlights to be able to read song sheets.

 It's going to be a great evening!  We will see you there.

Friends of Scouting

Posted on Jan 26 2015 - 11:24am
Just a reminder about the 2015 Friends of Scouting campaign for Pack 2.  The Council relies on these funds to care for the land we own, pay salaries, and conduct hundreds of training opportunities a year.  We also use this money to  fund scholarships so every boy can be a Scout.
We are hoping to have 100% participation.  Please don't delay.  Give today at http://tinyurl.com/qesahta.  Please be sure to list "2" when asked our Unit number.
Please be sure to let me (meganhelm0@gmail.com) know when you have given so I can keep track for the pack.  I will keep the amount completely confidential.
