We are Boy Scouts of America Cub Scout Pack 2, chartered to Northwest Hills United Methodist Church, serving families in Austin's Northwest Hills neighborhood and Doss Elementary.

What: This is another opportunity for our Pack to serve the community as we work toward another Journey to Excellence Ribbon in 2016!  

When: Saturday - March 5th

Where: Doss Elementary and surrounding grounds

Who: all Pack 2 Cub Scouts and Parents interested in helping out - we have 60 spots that must be filled via the Austin Parks registration tool

Pack Meeting: Blue and Gold Crossover Banquet

The Blue and Gold Crossover Banquet is schedule for March 6th, starting at 5 pm. It will be celebration and ceremony for our Webelos 2 / Arrow of Light Scouts earning their Arrow of Light award, the highest award in Cub Scouts. Some of those Scouts will continue their path to Eagle by "crossing over" into Boy Scouts.  We will be joined by the Order of the Arrow Ceremonial Team from Troop 3, who will be leading us in the crossover ceremony, and representatives of the Troops into which our Scouts are crossing.

Friends of Scouting (FOS) District Luncheon

Friends of Scouting (FOS) Distric Luncheon: Seats still available

The Capitol Area Council is hosting their FOS District Luncheon next Thursday, February 25th, and Pack 2 has a table with a few seats remaining for FOS donors. The keynote speaker is Joseph Landy, the CEO of Warburg Pincus and BSA national board member. This is a free luncheon, held at the Austin Convention Center, begins at 11:50 a.m. and ends at 1:00 p.m. (and free parking is available in the convention center parking lot). If you’d like to attend the luncheon, please make your FOS donation and e-mail Mike Meroney (mikemeroney@icloud.com) ASAP to reserve your seat — I’m filling seats on a first come, first serve basis.

Pinewood Derby

Its Pinewood Derby Time!

The annual Pack 2 Pinewood Derby will be on Sunday, January 31, from 3p - 5p.  A few reminders and helpful hints to get you to the race successfully:

We have our final Pinewood Derby Workshop scheduled for this coming Sunday, January 10th, from 1 - 4 PM at Mike & Shannon Meroney's house. The address is 6901 Glen Ridge Dr, Austin, TX 78731.
 
Check it in
You must check in your car on Saturday, January 30 at NWHUMC Youth Center across Hart Ln. from Murchison Middle School. Car check-in takes place in the Youth Center from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. We will have our Official Scale plus tools, extra weights, glue, graphite, etc. to help get your car reach optimum weight and condition. Once your car is checked in it will be impounded until the actual race. No modifications will be allowed after your car is checked in. Please do not put the stick-on numbers on your cars as this will be done at check-in. Please do bring your stickers to check in though as we can always use them.
 
Volunteers Needed
For the race, we need lots more volunteers. Please send Jason Rios an email if you are able to help the Pack by serving in one of those roles. We need your help!!
 
Race Rules
We will adhere to the Official Pack 2 Rules posted on the Pack website.
 
Parts & parts
Hobby Lobby seems to the be go-to store for most everything you need (outside of 1000 grit sandpaper), but remember to get there soon as supplies go fast this time of year. And remember to buy only BSA-approved parts (wheels, kits, etc).
 
Remember the Big 3:
Friction, shape, and weight distribution. Prep your wheels and axles by grinding and polishing them to a shine. Remember that aerodynamics do make a difference. And put all of your weight in the back, preferably low and over the rear axle. I highly recommend this book about optimizing your car: Pinewood Derby Speed Secrets Book - by Derby Monkey. Worth the money.

November Pack Meeting and Cub World Campout (Nov '15)

We currently have 112 people signed up for the Cub World at Tom Wooten campout!  The campout will be at the Garrison camp site from noon on Saturday Nov 21 2015 to noon on Sunday. This should be great fun for the whole family!  Cost is $12.50 per person to cover food and activities.

A cold front is blowing through Friday night to early Saturday. Rain chances are 60% early Saturday with clearing in the afternoon. In the event of severe weather (which I do not expect), we can move everyone into the dining hall on the camp grounds. The high on Saturday is 59 degrees with a low of 36 degrees, so please bring warm clothes and warm camping gear. You really should bring a foam mat or an air mat to sleep on to get your body off the cold ground
 
Lora Phillips has graciously volunteered to organize food for the campout. Menu includes lemon and honey glazed drumstick chicken and green beans for dinner; and mini egg, cheese and ham breakfast pies for breakfast. Feel free to bring other food or side dishes, if you wish. If anyone in your family is allergic to items in this menu, please let me know, and I will try to make arrangements for alternatives.
 
We have the BB Gun range reserved from 1 - 4 pm on Saturday afternoon, so if your Scout wants to learn to shoot a BB Gun (or shoot one again, for returning Scouts), this will be the time to do it. Cub World provides the BB guns for the range.

We will be having our pack meeting on Sunday Nov 15 2015, from 3:00pm - 5:00pm in the gym on the second floor of the Family Life Center at NWHUMC.  Topics/activities include:

Upcoming Pack Meeting and Overnight At Seawolf Park (Oct '15)

Pack Meeting
Our next Pack Meeting is this Sunday (10/11) at NWHUMC in the gym of the Family Life Center from 3:00 - 5:00 pm. Scouts please wear your Class A uniforms. In this meeting, Scouts will start learning the different components of the Scout Law: "A scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent." This Sunday we will focus on bravery. There will be a fun activity for the Scouts as they focus on bravery, and parents can help too. We will also discuss final logistics for the Overnight at Seawolf Park.
 
Overnight at Seawolf Park
The Overnight at Seawolf Park is Saturday 10/17 through Sunday 10/18. Details for the event are available here. We currently have 95 people registered for the event, which is our limit, but some have not yet paid. If you are registered but have not paid, please do so by this Saturday, 10/10. Starting this Sunday, we will reopen the unpaid spots and begin accepting people from the waiting list on a first come, first served basis. Please email me if you would like to be added to the waiting list. This should be a great trip!
 
Bear Service Project, H'Owl Cleanup
Following the Doss H'Owl on 10/24, the Bears will have a service project to clean up after the event. All Bears that are in town and available, please meet on the Doss blacktop at 5:00 pm.
